The Importance of Sustainability
Sustainability, in the environmental sense, is defined as the avoidance of the depletion of natural resources in order to maintain an ecological balance. To me, sustainability means leaving the planet better than we found it at the beginning of my generation. Sustainability is an easy to understand topic - nothing is infinite on our planet, so we need to act sensibly in how we manage and use the natural resources at our disposal. When the subject is so easy to understand, it is also easy to see how important it is - if we don't act sustainable way, we're going to use up all the natural resources on our planet. It is just as important for an individual to understand as it is for a community - community efforts to act in a sustainable way are more impactful than one person being more sustainably-conscious than the others.
Now, how exactly do you act sustainably? That's where science comes in - cutting edge research and development on the topic of sustainability lead to easy ways for individuals and communities to shave off excess resource use and become sustainable. With the internet leaving people without an excuse to remain uninformed, it is up to all of us - individuals, communities, even countries - to address sustainability issues and fix our overuse of the world's natural resources.
